This program caters to students seeking to merge a strong mathematics foundation with a specialization outside the Mathematics Department (such as atmospheric sciences, biology, computer science, engineering, physics, statistics, or education). The suggested mathematical prerequisites for this track include upper-level courses in advanced calculus and linear algebra. Students should select their external specialization area and form their MS committee early, ideally within the first year of study. All external specializations require prior approval from the student's committee, which must consist of at least one representative from the specialization field and two mathematics faculty members. The advisor-led committee will oversee the academic plan and guide the thesis or master's paper development.
