This program enhances students' subject matter expertise via academic coursework while enabling them to explore specific mathematical domains more thoroughly through thesis writing.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides graduate programs for both master of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in pure/applied mathematics and statistics, along with non-thesis master's in applied mathematics and master's in probability/statistics (see also Statistics). Additionally, the department consistently offers actuarial science courses accredited by the Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society, preparing students for the first three actuarial examinations. This program strengthens students' content understanding through structured learning while facilitating deeper mathematical exploration via thesis work. The applied mathematics master's equips students with robust fundamentals in key applied mathematics fields, offering adaptable curriculum options selected with advisory committee input, potentially including relevant cross-departmental courses. The probability/statistics master's and statistics MS degrees establish comprehensive foundations for statistics-oriented careers.
