The M.A. in Mathematics program at San Francisco State University enables students to explore higher-level mathematics with support from a diverse faculty engaged in various research fields. Courses maintain an intimate setting, typically with under 20 students, allowing graduate candidates to focus on their specialized interests through faculty-led seminars and research initiatives.
While an undergraduate degree is mandatory for admission, it doesn't need to be in mathematics. Numerous participants with mathematics minors have thrived in SF State's graduate curriculum.
Prospective students should ideally have finished three calculus semesters, linear algebra, and three upper-level math classes—covering modern algebra and real analysis—with a B grade or higher. Conditional admission may be granted to those needing to complete prerequisite courses during their initial year.
The program typically takes two years to finish. Graduates often continue to Ph.D. studies or secure positions in the Bay Area's tech and finance sectors, or at California's extensive network of community colleges.
