The Watershed Data specialization integrates data science methodologies with comprehensive understanding of water's physical, chemical, social, and biological influences as it flows through ecosystems. Participants will conduct hands-on research through field work, lab studies, and coursework in both watershed and data science disciplines, earning a Minor in Applied Data Science alongside their primary degree. The curriculum begins with fundamental physical and mathematical coursework, progressing to teach students how watershed data can enhance comprehension of ecosystem functions and stewardship. Key courses highlight watershed studies, data interpretation, computational methods, and the integration of these competencies for innovative research and communication.
Program Objectives
Graduates will develop the ability to:
Explain fundamental principles of watershed ecology and sustainability, covering climate systems, hydrologic cycles, water purity, human water consumption, and responsible resource management.
Utilize data analysis methods to solve watershed and water resource issues using spatial and time-based datasets.
Gather, process, and evaluate atmospheric, hydrologic, water quality, usage, and governance information.
Assess watershed issues and sustainability obstacles employing geographic data, field measurements, sensor outputs, and hydrological modeling.
Exhibit advanced analytical reasoning, written composition, and verbal presentation capabilities.
