Political science examines governance and political behavior in societies. It analyzes international treaties and institutions alongside the political processes that form and influence them. The field explores civic engagement and policy-making structures at municipal, state, and federal levels in the U.S. It investigates electoral systems, party politics, and judicial frameworks through cross-national comparisons. The discipline also addresses fundamental questions about political existence and purpose. Political influences permeate every aspect of society continuously. The powerful, changing impacts of political decisions manifest nearly universally.
The department's program spans five specialized areas: U.S. government, political philosophy, cross-national politics, global affairs, and policy analysis. These core concentrations are enhanced by mandatory supplementary studies. Students may choose from various complementary paths including a secondary minor, interdisciplinary studies, language proficiency, research methodology, or a dual degree program.
