The CACREP-accredited Master of Education in Counseling with a Couples, Marriage, and Family specialization offers comprehensive training in mental health counseling, focusing on assisting families facing various complex issues. The program emphasizes comparative, multidimensional, and culturally sensitive approaches to family therapy. This curriculum meets Virginia's academic standards for licensure as both a Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Students complete 63 credit hours of coursework and clinical training over two years, with hands-on practice embedded throughout. During the first year, learners gain initial client interaction through a carefully supervised 150-hour practicum. The second year features two 300-hour internships for in-depth counseling work with couples and families. Interns serve the community at the on-campus New Horizons Family Counseling Center, which has provided complimentary counseling for over 30 years to about 300 families annually. This center gives students exceptional leadership development, clinical practice, and research opportunities while delivering vital community services.
