Across Virginia and nationwide, school systems are seeing a swift rise in English learner (EL) populations, yet there's a critical lack of educators equipped to support them. William & Mary's ESL/Bilingual Education master's program develops teachers to effectively serve culturally and linguistically diverse students across general education, ESL, and dual language settings.
The M.A.Ed in Curriculum & Instruction with an ESL/Bilingual Education focus is an intensive 12-month program for aspiring educators, leading to PreK-12 ESL certification. This pathway is exclusively designed for those without prior teaching credentials. Graduates also gain strong preparation for potential doctoral studies in ESL/Bilingual Education.
W&M's program cultivates empathetic, skilled educators equipped to champion EL students and their communities. With a strong social justice framework, participants become effective advocates while mastering research-based approaches. The curriculum emphasizes asset-based language instruction that honors students' cultural and linguistic identities.
Regardless of future teaching environments—urban, suburban, or rural—graduates learn to foster inclusive classrooms where every student's voice is valued and supported in their learning journey.
