The Department of Applied Science is an interdisciplinary graduate program primarily centered on doctoral studies, while also providing select Master of Science degree options. Students can tailor both degrees to specialize in various concentrations across physical and natural sciences. Each graduate works closely with their advisory committee to design a personalized academic path aligned with their career aspirations. Our diverse student body brings varied backgrounds and professional objectives to the program. New graduate students engage in coursework, faculty mentorship, peer collaboration, and seminar participation as part of their academic journey. The curriculum's coursework element is exceptionally adaptable, developed collaboratively between students and their faculty advisors. The Applied Science Ph.D. program provides full financial support, including a $27,000 annual Research Assistantship along with tuition coverage and health benefits.
To earn their degree, candidates must complete their approved course sequence, demonstrate mastery through comprehensive qualifying exams, conduct significant original research, and successfully defend their dissertation before their advisory committee in a public forum.

When applying for graduate study, it is standard practice in the United States to require all applicants to have a minimum of sixteen years of schooling and an earned degree equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. On occasion, graduates of three-year postsecondary programs in prestigious international universities may be well qualified for admission to a graduate program at William & Mary.
Upon the recommendation of the graduate program to which you are applying, the TOEFL/IELTS requirement can be waived for applicants who will have received a degree from a college or university in which English is the primary language of instruction. A transcript is required as evidence of successful instruction in English as a primary language. Contact the graduate program to which you are applying to request such a waiver.
