Students have the opportunity to design a customized interdisciplinary major in collaboration with a faculty advisor, aligning with their specific academic interests. The student and advisor share responsibility for developing a rigorous interdisciplinary program, which requires approval from the Committee on Interdisciplinary Studies (CIS). Typically, interdisciplinary majors build upon a strong foundation in an established field, incorporating courses from at least three different departments, with no single department contributing more than 50% of the total credits. Introductory-level courses beyond two are rarely approved.
For those pursuing a B.S. degree, completion of three additional science courses is required beyond the NQR requirement. These courses must come from departments or programs offering a B.S. degree, though science-based courses from non-B.S. granting departments (such as Marine Science) may qualify with CIS approval. None of these three supplementary science courses can be taken as Pass/Fail.
