The College of Science is dedicated to assisting students who aspire to become educators in science, mathematics, and technology across all educational levels. Our Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education (SMTE) program provides specialized content courses tailored for those pursuing K-12 teaching careers in these fields. SMTE coursework also forms a fundamental component of degree programs designed to prepare students for Teacher Certification. While the SMTE program itself doesn't confer degrees, certification-track degrees are available through other Science departments and the College of Education and Human Development. Prospective Texas elementary and secondary school teachers must fulfill both degree and certification criteria. Below, we detail the steps and requirements for becoming a certified science, mathematics, or technology instructor in Texas. Undergraduate students from the College of Science or College of Liberal Arts pursuing initial teacher certification for 4-8, 7-12, or EC-12 levels before graduation are automatically eligible for the Education Minor.
