Pursuing a degree in food science and human nutrition goes beyond simply studying food—it encompasses the entire journey from conception to consumption. At Clemson, you'll trace food's path from its origins in the soil, through retail channels, and ultimately to dining tables. As a student in this program, you'll gain comprehensive knowledge about food's effects on human health and society. The curriculum extends beyond lectures, featuring extensive laboratory work where you'll discover and experiment with food's remarkable properties. Whether your passion lies in food chemistry, food safety research, or helping patients with dietary restrictions like celiac disease, Clemson will equip you for professional advancement. This specialization prepares graduates for careers across all scales of the food industry—from local to international. You can tailor your education by choosing one of three IFT-certified focus areas: food packaging and production, sustainable food systems and nutrition, or culinology. Notably, our Culinary Science track is among the elite programs nationwide recognized by the Research Chef's Association for meeting culinology certification standards.
