First-year engineering majors at Clemson start in our general engineering program, giving them a year to discover various engineering fields. Biosystems engineering centers on sustainably producing biorefinery outputs like biofuels, bioactive molecules, and biomaterials by leveraging natural metabolic pathways and eco-friendly processing methods. Students in this major can select from two focus tracks: bioprocess engineering or ecological engineering.
Bioprocess engineering builds on microbiology principles, whereas ecological engineering is grounded in ecology. Graduating with a biosystems engineering degree leads to diverse career paths, from biofuel manufacturing to ecological planning. Qualified students can participate in our Bachelor's-to-Graduate program, allowing them to count certain Bachelor of Science credits toward a Master of Science in biosystems engineering or environmental engineering and science.
