The Literary Studies & Teaching specialization provides an intensive, customized curriculum for advanced English literature study, equipping graduates for roles in secondary and higher education, professional development and research, as well as diverse writing fields. Participants collaborate with faculty advisors and acquire hands-on teaching experience in composition and literature courses. The program offers multiple course options, culminating in a thesis, examination, or portfolio project. While enjoying curricular flexibility, students must complete coursework in global literary perspectives, critical theory, genre studies, and pedagogical methods. Additional electives are available in literature, linguistics, and writing disciplines. Candidates pursue this specialization to deepen their literary knowledge, enhance teaching credentials, expand writing capabilities, and prepare for PhD programs. The program is available through both on-campus and online formats.

Qualification Requirements

students applying to the Literary Studies & Teaching specialization must also submit a 7-10 page writing sample of literary analysis (critical analysis of a literary work with reference to a secondary works of literary criticism and/or literary theory). If you are applying for a teaching assistantship, you also need to take the GRE General Test (only Verbal and Writing scores are considered in assistantship decisions). GRE scores are only required to be considered for a teaching assistantship, not for admission to the graduate program. A 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average - GPA - or above (on a 4.0 scale) is required to be academically admissible. The Graduate School calculates the last 90 quarter hour or last 60 semester hour GPA.
A score of 213 or above on the computer-based TOEFL, A score of 79 or above on the Internet-based TOEFL. a minimum International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) academic score of 6.5 (scores should be no more than two years old at the time of application)
