Discover how to break into the competitive world of songwriting by mastering essential composition techniques, understanding historical influences, and gaining business knowledge. You'll receive one-on-one composition instruction, hone specialized abilities and artistic perspectives, and gather the resources needed to establish yourself in the ever-changing music business. Although opportunities for music in media have expanded significantly, launching a successful career has grown more complex. As you train for songwriting, you'll explore key elements of artistry, technical skills, and industry practices. Your coursework will cover songwriting history and critique, song structure analysis, studio production methods, music business operations, and recording tech, along with joining the Songwriters Forum—a workshop focused on refining the creative process of popular music composition. Through these advanced sessions, you'll create and refine original works, get professional critiques, and work alongside fellow composers and lyricists.

Qualification Requirements

Basic competence in music theory and history is a prerequisite for all graduate degree programs in music. Entering graduate students are required to complete a music theory entrance exam and meet history coursework requirements. Based on exam results and review of the student's transcript, up to 8 points of remedial music theory and/or history coursework may be required. Remedial courses cannot be used to meet degree requirements.
You must have the equivalent of a regionally accredited four-year US bachelor's degree before beginning your studies at NYU Steinhardt to be considered for admission.
