This two-year program consists of one year at Central Michigan University followed by a year of advanced history studies at an affiliated institution. It caters to two specific student categories:
Exchange Students. Those transferring to CMU from partner schools through a graduate exchange arrangement with the History Department must specifically apply for and register in the Joint MA as their principal degree program.
Combined PhD Candidates. Applicants to the Joint PhD in history are automatically registered in the Joint MA program, which forms the initial two-year phase of the doctoral program. Apart from the exchange students mentioned earlier, direct applications to the Joint MA are not permitted, though students can earn this degree by fulfilling its requirements within the Joint PhD curriculum.
