As a materials scientist, your role focuses on analyzing the chemical characteristics of various substances. You'll apply this expertise to enhance current materials or develop innovative ones. This specialization teaches you to construct nanostructures, investigate pharmaceutical advancements, and expand possibilities through biomimetics.
Similar to all chemistry students, you'll start with foundational courses in science and mathematics. You'll also participate in practical research and collaborate directly with distinguished professionals. For five decades, our capstone initiative has connected students with faculty for impactful research projects. This unique program stands alone among Michigan's public institutions. Over the years, numerous students have successfully completed capstone projects, with many publishing their results in academic journals and presenting at national conferences.
Though the capstone project showcases your personal interests, you'll receive continuous support. A faculty advisor will provide guidance throughout the process to ensure your achievement. Additionally, you'll create a research poster, compose a thesis, and have opportunities to present your findings.
