Chemistry professionals are shaped through laboratory experience, and as a chemistry student, you'll receive essential hands-on training for your growth. Starting from your initial classes through your faculty-mentored capstone project, you won't need to delay experiencing the wonder of scientific exploration—you'll encounter it throughout your journey.
Pursuing a chemistry degree means beginning with the same foundational science and math courses as all program participants. Then, your personal interests will chart your path. Whether your goal is creating innovative pharmaceuticals, safeguarding ecosystems, or synthesizing novel materials, this specialization lets you follow your passions.
Our American Chemical Society-approved program emphasizes practical research and close faculty collaboration. For five decades, Michigan's unique capstone initiative has connected students with professors for impactful research projects. Over the years, numerous participants have finished capstones, with many publishing in academic journals and showcasing their work at national conferences.
Though your capstone project expresses your individual interests, you'll receive continuous support. A faculty advisor will provide guidance throughout the process. You'll create a research poster, compose a thesis, and potentially present your findings at conferences ranging from local to international venues.
Regardless of your specialization, our professors prioritize your professional preparation. The knowledge you gain will prove valuable whether you continue to graduate studies or enter the workforce immediately after graduation.
