CMU's therapeutic recreation program equips students with the expertise, competencies, and hands-on training required to earn national certification as therapeutic recreation specialists. This major teaches students to deliver therapeutic interventions and leisure programming for individuals with cognitive impairments, mental health challenges, mobility limitations, substance abuse disorders, and aging-related disabilities. Graduates often find employment in rehabilitation hospitals, psychiatric institutions, extended care facilities, specialized camps, and community integration initiatives. As Michigan's inaugural nationally accredited program, CMU's therapeutic recreation focus readies students for NCTRC certification. Learners benefit from instruction by nationally certified professors, developing capabilities for careers in medical centers, rehab clinics, mental health organizations, or senior care institutions. The program culminates with a clinical internship focused on implementing therapeutic and recreational services for older adults or people with developmental, physical, or psychological conditions.
