Established in 1947 by the Department of Public Health and Recreation, the Recreation degree program holds accreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Park, Recreation, and Tourism Related Professions (COAPRT). This program has maintained uninterrupted accreditation since initially receiving it in April 1987, showcasing the quality and reputation of our curriculum. The Bachelor's in Recreation is a nationally recognized program featuring a foundational curriculum divided between concentration-specific courses and major electives. Students who complete any concentration can pursue national and state certification. While the general recreation track offers the most flexibility in elective choices, learners may opt for specialized study through one of two approved B.S. Recreation Degree concentrations: Recreation Management or Recreation Therapy. Additionally, we provide an M.S. in Recreation to address the rising demand for skilled professionals and administrators across public, non-profit, and commercial sectors at local, regional, national, and international levels.
Our Department of Public Health and Recreation develops leaders and practitioners dedicated to enhancing health and improving living, working, learning, and recreational environments. We implement a Teacher-Scholar-Practitioner Model by engaging students, alumni, faculty, and communities to advance public health and recreation practices. The undergraduate public health curriculum explores various health dimensions (physical, emotional, social, environmental, and spiritual) and their determinants, along with population-level health promotion strategies (including epidemiology, policy, and community health) to foster optimal wellness conditions for all.
