The Department of Psychology officially launched its Ph.D. program in Developmental Psychology (previously called Human Development) in 1965. The curriculum covers the entire range of human development across the lifespan. To date, this program has awarded nearly 75 doctoral degrees, with most alumni currently engaged in research at universities or government research facilities. Our graduates hold positions at institutions like Lafayette College and Smith College, as well as larger universities including Rutgers and Kansas State. Some work at federal research centers such as the National Institute of Mental Health, while others conduct policy research for private organizations.
The program builds a strong foundation in psychological science, with special emphasis on human development. Participants gain skills in advanced developmental research methods, learn to analyze developmental processes within intricate systems, engage with varied populations, and value both theoretical and practical research applications. This training equips students for professional paths as scholars, educators, policy advisors, and beyond.
This degree typically consists of upwards of 90 credits for competition.
Specific requirements include successful completion of the following: (1) Developmental Psychology core classes, plus those recommended outside the program; (2) Suggested sequence of courses in statistics-methods in order to develop competence to design, collection, and analyze complex developmental data; (3) Research apprenticeship; (4) Empirical MA thesis; (5) Ph.D. Comprehensive examination; (6) Dissertation; (7) Completion of all other University and Departmental requirements.
