Students aiming for a PhD who begin with only a bachelor's degree must first complete an MA program before PhD admission. This typically takes three semesters. After earning the MA, students can progress to the PhD program. The Anthropology Department's graduate program specializes in Medical Anthropology and Global Health, designed to equip students with skills to: (1) understand and tackle the multifaceted biological, social, cultural, psychological, economic, and environmental factors influencing health and illness across local and global contexts, both theoretically and practically, and (2) assess healthcare systems and service delivery. A Global Health Certificate can be earned alongside the anthropology degree.
The MA program provides foundational training in anthropological theory and methods, preparing graduates for careers in teaching, research, or service. Prior undergraduate coursework in anthropology, while beneficial, is not required for admission.
