Over a single academic year, you'll explore diverse subjects, from the societal impact of illicit substances to traditional healing practices in East Asia. Graduates also have the opportunity to obtain an interdisciplinary global health certificate through collaboration with the university's School of Medicine. Our students have pursued research, volunteer work, and academic advancement across the globe.
As part of this MA program, you'll join a select group of peers examining key areas like modern anthropological theory, ethnographic methodologies, and the global HIV/AIDS crisis. Instruction comes from faculty who have achieved national recognition, including two members elected to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences—an honor reserved for world-class scholars.
The Department of Anthropology's graduate program specializes in Medical Anthropology and Global Health, aiming to equip students with skills to: (1) understand and address the multifaceted biological, social, cultural, psychological, economic, and environmental factors influencing health across local and global contexts, and (2) critically assess healthcare systems and service delivery. Students can earn a Global Health Certificate alongside their anthropology degree.
