The Spanish Major's core mission is to advance the understanding of Spanish language and the cultures of Spanish-speaking communities. This program offers foundational knowledge and appreciation of Hispanic literature, cultures, linguistic abilities, and analytical skills, preparing students for diverse career paths. It collaborates with and complements other academic disciplines at the University while serving local community needs and fostering global awareness of the Hispanic world.
This major explores the cultural and linguistic ties between the United States and Spanish-speaking nations, emphasizing that Spanish isn't merely a foreign language but one to be valued and developed alongside English, particularly in Southern California.
With various concentration options, the Spanish Major provides both adaptability and breadth while maintaining a solid foundation in essential linguistic, analytical, and cultural competencies. The curriculum is tailored to reflect the distinctive characteristics of Cal State San Marcos' student population and aligns with the University's guiding principles.
