The Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages with a French Teacher Certification focus aims to cultivate a deeper appreciation of Francophone cultures by exploring their fundamental expression: language. Beyond enhancing speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities, our curriculum introduces students to historical, literary, and social aspects of French-speaking societies. Alongside language, literature, and writing classes, students enroll in teaching methods, psychology, and professional education courses to master how to instruct French language, literature, culture, and composition. The final semester includes supervised teaching with a licensed educator. Participants can also engage with the French Club to celebrate and exchange Francophone cultural experiences. Weekly gatherings at the French Table provide chances to dine and converse with native speakers, peers, and local community members. Intermediate and advanced students (fourth semester and beyond) enjoy weekly 30-minute one-on-one conversations with native French speakers. We highly recommend all French majors pursue study abroad opportunities, whether through brief faculty-led trips or extended exchange programs lasting a summer, semester, or full academic year. French Education majors are particularly encouraged to apply for the American Teaching Assistant in France program, which places U.S. French majors in French schools as government-employed teaching assistants for a year. PSU's global university partnerships enable students to pay domestic tuition while studying overseas.
