Certificates can be obtained by both regularly enrolled and extended learning students, recognizing the successful completion of a structured curriculum aimed to:
develop specific professional, vocational, or career skills, or
achieve comprehensive knowledge in a specialized area of an academic discipline, or
explore diverse content within traditional or emerging interdisciplinary subjects.
Some certificate programs include 600-level courses as mandatory or optional components. Undergraduate students are ineligible to enroll in these advanced courses. Participants must complete at least two-thirds of their certificate-related coursework at the university. Credit transfers or course substitutions require approval from the relevant campus authority.
Tailored for students outside English disciplines, the 18-unit Creative Writing Certificate fosters growth in students' creative writing abilities. Through three core courses (foundations, workshop, and seminar), participants create, analyze, and evaluate their own work alongside exemplary literature, engaging in both individual and collaborative efforts. Three elective courses offer opportunities to explore various aspects of creative writing, including teaching, editing, publishing, and performance. Practical experiences may involve mentoring K-12 students, contributing to campus publications, collaborating with radio stations, participating in open mic events, or applying creative writing techniques to community initiatives. This program equips students with valuable skills applicable to diverse fields such as arts, communications, science, business, government, and social services.
