Public history surrounds us in various spaces beyond the classroom, where professionals and consultants work to preserve historical knowledge for public engagement. These historians typically operate in museums, government offices, cultural resource centers, libraries, and media production, ensuring history remains accessible to everyone. At CSUSB, the program provides both undergraduate and graduate students with a comprehensive understanding of public history, along with internship opportunities. The curriculum includes foundational courses in public and oral history, upper-level history content classes, and a mandatory internship. (Admission to the internship program requires an application and a minimum 3.0 GPA—application materials can be found below. Students falling short of these requirements should seek guidance from Public History faculty.) Elective courses allow students to tailor their studies to personal interests and career aspirations, covering topics like historical archaeology, exhibit design, museum and archive management, and archival methods. Beyond academics, students can participate in extracurricular activities such as contributing to the student editorial board or publishing in CSUSB's historical journal, History in the Making. As history majors, students gain extensive training in historical scholarship and global perspectives through diverse survey courses.
