The M.A. in English program at CSUN provides focused education in textual and cultural analysis, covering areas like rhetoric, literary studies, creative writing, and critical theory. Our alumni gain expertise in analyzing and creating diverse texts while understanding their social, cultural, political, creative, and technological dimensions. The program attracts students eager to employ their analytical and writing abilities across historical and contemporary cultural works.
The English M.A. features three specialization tracks: Literature, Creative Writing, and Rhetoric and Composition. A select number of graduate students may qualify for Teaching Associate (TA) positions. TAs complete ENGL 600A and ENGL 600B (3 units each) while typically instructing one section of Approaches to University Writing per term under supervision, receiving compensation. Advanced TAs may access additional teaching opportunities. Prospective students should consult the graduate advisor regarding program tracks and career paths, while those interested in TA positions should contact the composition director.
