The Rhetoric, Composition, and Teaching of English (RCTE) program operates within the University of Arizona's English Department as one of four graduate offerings. Students can pursue either a Ph.D. or M.A. track. The M.A. curriculum caters to those planning careers in public schools and community colleges, typically spanning two years. Educators employed full-time in local schools may extend their studies up to the Graduate College's six-year maximum.
RCTE graduate students frequently earn recognition for their community involvement, action-based research, academic publications, and creative teaching approaches. Many have been honored as Carson Scholars, Crossroads Collaborative Scholars, Fulbright recipients, and Scholars for the Dream. Our students regularly receive teaching accolades, including the 1885 Dissertation Fellowship, Centennial Achievement Award, Marshall Foundation Fellowship, and Patrick Dissertation Award. RCTE dissertations commonly address social transformation and equity issues.
Both MA and PhD candidates teach in our distinguished Writing Program, gaining experience with first-year and advanced courses while developing professional skills in research, curriculum design, assessment, and writing center operations. First-year instructors benefit from intensive mentoring, with ongoing support throughout their teaching assignments. The program also helps secure research assistantship opportunities university-wide.
