The increasing number of students with Armenian heritage attending California State University, Northridge (CSUN) led to the creation of the Armenian Student Association (ASA) in 1976. By 1983, the university introduced its first Armenian Language course, paving the way for the Armenian Studies Program (ASP).
Over the past three decades since these initiatives began, CSUN has grown to become the largest campus in the California State University system, with annual enrollments ranging from 38,000 to 40,000 students. This expansion has been accompanied by a consistent increase in Armenian students and faculty members. Armenian students now represent 8-10% of the total student population, with about 450 graduating each year. The university also employs over 100 Armenian faculty and staff, including program directors, department chairs, and senior administrators.
The Languages and Cultures major equips students for our interconnected global society by developing language skills and cultural understanding. This program fosters advanced linguistic abilities and cross-cultural awareness, opening doors to international career prospects and personal growth. Alongside primary language studies, students explore comparative cultural and literary studies to understand how language, culture, and human behavior intersect. The program culminates with seminars on cultural theories and methodologies. Students are encouraged to participate in study abroad programs, learn additional languages, and choose from diverse interdisciplinary courses examining global cultural interactions.
