The Bachelor of Arts program offers students a comprehensive grounding in biology within a liberal arts and sciences framework. With proper planning to meet graduate and professional school prerequisites, the B.A. is ideal for those pursuing careers in dentistry, medicine, optometry, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine, as well as those aiming for teaching credentials or graduate studies. This degree also serves well for professions like pharmaceutical sales and medical illustration (refer to Pre-Medical and Pre-Professional Information). Aligned with the College of Science and Mathematics' mission, the Biology Department educates students to become scientifically knowledgeable citizens, prepares them for advanced academic programs, cultivates future leaders in industry and education, trains competent K-12 science educators, and develops candidates for biomedical fields including medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, and pharmacy.
The Biology Department commits to fostering diversity, inclusion, and equity in science, addressing historical imbalances by amplifying underrepresented voices and encouraging diverse scientific viewpoints. Through education, research, and community engagement, the department works to implement systemic changes that make science more approachable, secure, and inclusive for everyone.
