Starting Fall 2023, the Master of Arts in Human Experience Design Interactions (MA_HXDI) has received STEM designation. Ranked #6 for Best Master's in Human Computer Interaction by College Rank, the MA_HXDI program spans 33 semester units and equips students and career changers from various academic backgrounds for specialized multidisciplinary design careers. Participants gain mastery in experience design methodologies, learning to enhance systems, products, environments, and services. Working with diverse faculty and top-tier organizations, students employ advanced technologies to solve intricate problems. These resources combine quantitative analytics with qualitative human-centered research, while exploring modern digital communication interfaces. This balanced curriculum bridges theory and application, preparing graduates for diverse design positions ranging from research to interactive systems. Departmental research labs facilitate cross-disciplinary projects, allowing students to partner with leaders in business, government, education, entertainment, healthcare, and tech sectors – developing premium design competencies valued across industries.

Qualification Requirements

Students interested in applying to the MA_HXDI program at CSULB should submit the University application. The applicant must complete and submit the application in order to be considered for admission into MA_HXDI graduate program. The applicant should also submit a MA_HXDI application with a statement of purpose, a resume, a digital portfolio of work that represents their educational and/or career skills, experiences, interests and achievements (such as but not limited to publications, projects and/or research), and two letters of recommendation to the Department of Design.

Two letters of recommendation submitted through the College of the Arts/Design Department Slideroom page must be filed by the application deadline.
Completion of a four-year college course of study including coursework that prepares students for graduate study in design and hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent from an accredited or internationally recognized institution.
Good academic standing at the last college attended.
Past academic record (as reflected in the undergraduate GPA).
Resume and Portfolio (10-25 digital images showing original work as evidence of experiences, skills, interests and process developing work), evaluated by the graduate admissions review committee.
Completion of MA_HXDI application.
Statement of purpose (that represents skill in writing, leadership and collaboration potential, educational goals and academic strengths).
Two letters of recommendation.
Have earned a grade point average of at least 2.5 on the last degree completed by the candidate or have attained a grade point average of at least 2.5 (A=4.0) in the last 60 semester (90 quarter) units attempted, and
