The field of Classics encompasses the exploration of ancient Greek and Roman languages, literature, and societies. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Classics along with specialized minors in Classical Archaeology, Classical Studies, Greek, or Latin. The major presents four distinct tracks: Ancient Greek Studies, Classical Archaeology, Classical Studies, Greek Studies, and Roman Studies. Those considering graduate studies in Classics or Classical Archaeology should seek guidance from the department advisor early in their academic journey. The department strongly encourages students to gain firsthand experience in Italy or Greece through various programs that immerse participants in these ancient civilizations' archaeological remains. This can be achieved via CSULB study abroad opportunities or programs offered by other institutions, such as College Year at Athens, the American School of Classical Studies summer session, the Aegean Institute, the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies in Rome, or participation in archaeological excavations. With departmental approval, coursework from these institutions may count toward CSULB degree requirements.
