The Master of Science in Communicative Disorders program (encompassing speech-language pathology and audiology), which has maintained accreditation from the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association since 1969, aims to: offer graduate-level professional education spanning the comprehensive field of communicative disorders, enable students to gain hands-on experience through observation and treatment of clients with communication impairments across diverse clinical settings both on and off campus, and prepare students to evaluate, diagnose, develop treatment plans, and deliver therapy for various communication disorders and patient populations. This specialized graduate program equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to identify and address communication disorders. Coursework focuses on speech and language development, pediatric speech and language disorders, hearing science and assessment, neurological communication disorders, fluency issues, Augmentative/Alternative Communication methods, and communication challenges in culturally/linguistically diverse children, among other key areas. The majority of graduate-level courses are taught by doctoral faculty with specialized expertise in clinical disciplines required for ASHA's Certificate of Clinical Competence. Students develop their clinical competencies at renowned healthcare facilities, including major teaching hospitals and Southern California public schools. A unique feature of the program is its exposure to an exceptionally diverse patient population in terms of language and cultural backgrounds. After earning the M.S. degree, graduates qualify for the Speech-Language Pathology Services Credential in Language, Speech and Hearing for school-based practice, along with state licensure and national certification to work in hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings.
