The African American Studies Department functions as an interdisciplinary academic hub dedicated to expanding understanding of Black communities across the United States, Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, and Africa. The program critically examines slavery's historical context, colonial impacts, resistance movements, and liberation struggles while investigating their influence on modern political, social, and cultural manifestations of Black identity. Beyond studying slavery's legacy in the Americas, the curriculum addresses contemporary issues affecting Black communities in post-Civil Rights America and throughout the African diaspora, including internal community dynamics, gender roles, family structures, multiracial identities, sexual orientation, artistic expressions, and hip-hop culture.
