The Philosophy program empowers students to critically analyze diverse belief and value systems, reflect on the roots of their own convictions, cultivate analytical thinking and communication skills, and apply these abilities to real-world challenges.
Derived from the Greek terms philo (love) and sophia (wisdom), Philosophy fundamentally represents the pursuit of wisdom. This discipline systematically investigates and structures perspectives concerning the fundamental principles that shape thought, action, and existence.
California State University Bakersfield's Philosophy Program provides both a Bachelor of Arts degree major and minor option. Philosophy majors can specialize in one of three concentrations: Ethics & Moral Reasoning; Law, Justice, & Social Policy; or Mind & World.
At CSU Bakersfield, Philosophy students gain comprehensive knowledge of philosophical history while honing their capacity for logical, coherent thinking. The curriculum features diverse courses such as Metaphysics, Ethics, Existentialism, Epistemology, Political Philosophy, and more, equipping students with thorough philosophical training and the tools for future achievement.
