Philosophy students should relish engaging with complex, abstract ideas concerning what Bertrand Russell termed fundamental inquiries—those examining the logic and validity of commonly accepted notions and assumptions.
The honors program in philosophy caters to students seeking to explore philosophical subjects beyond standard seminar boundaries. It acknowledges both the completion of a higher number of advanced courses and consistent excellence across all coursework. To graduate with honors in philosophy, students must complete 36 credit hours in the discipline, including 18 at the 300 or 400 level, while maintaining a 3.5 GPA in philosophy courses and a 3.3 cumulative GPA. Honors candidates must also compose a senior thesis on a philosophical subject and defend it orally. Participants in the University Honors Program may apply their philosophy senior essay toward fulfilling that program's thesis requirement.
