The Department of Computing Mathematical Sciences (CMS) resides in picturesque Pasadena on Caltech's stunning campus. CMS brings together brilliant students and researchers united by their enthusiasm for scientific discovery and engineering, along with a determination to tackle computation's most profound questions. The Computing and Mathematical Sciences PhD program represents Caltech's innovative, cross-departmental initiative, drawing participants from computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, economics, operations research, and physical sciences. This rigorous program maintains selective admissions criteria while offering access to renowned faculty advisors from diverse fields. Optimization and Statistics have given rise to machine learning, big data analytics, and modern data science. Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree or the equivalent before beginning graduate study.
Applicants whose native language is not English and those who have had no formal instruction in English will be required to take a test to evaluate English proficiency. Please refer to "Required Tests" for a list of the GRE reporting requirements and the English proficiency exams currently accepted. The admissions committee may also consider research papers, publications and other original work.
