The Department of Cognitive, Linguistic, and Psychological Sciences (CLPS) at Brown University focuses on interdisciplinary research exploring the mind, brain, behavior, and language. It provides three doctoral tracks: Cognitive Science, Linguistics, and Psychology. Prospective PhD candidates apply to the department and select their specific program after completing their first year. The department does not offer standalone Master's degrees nor graduate programs in Clinical, Counseling, School, or Applied Psychology. Brown's Psychology graduate program aims to train future scholars and educators who will advance knowledge in both academic and practical fields. Students develop comprehensive understanding of psychological theories, scientific questions, and research methodologies while specializing in particular areas of study. Each student's academic path is tailored individually, with research and course selections guided by their chosen advisor and graduate committee. As interests evolve, students may switch focus areas, programs, or advisors. Cross-disciplinary collaboration with faculty beyond a student's primary advisor is actively encouraged.
