Brown University's Classics Department provides a Ph.D. program specializing in Sanskrit Language and Literature, along with a combined Classics and Sanskrit Ph.D. option for students wishing to incorporate Sanskrit studies into their classical research. The Sanskrit curriculum concentrates solely on the language and its literary works, while maintaining the same scholarly principles and methodologies as the Greek and Roman classics program. Students analyze texts within their wider cultural and historical frameworks, supported by thorough training in Sanskrit language studies. With over 100 years of Sanskrit education, Brown's program is now directed by James L. Fitzgerald, the Purandara Das Professor of Sanskrit in Classics, an expert in ancient Indian religions, texts, and philosophies. Lecturer David Buchta, a specialist in Sanskrit literature, Indian philosophy, and Pinian grammar, complements the faculty.
