The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures provides graduate students with in-depth study opportunities focusing on the literature, cultures, and languages of Bosnia/Croatia/Serbia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. Our program facilitates interdisciplinary and comparative studies across Slavic cultures.
Students collaborate closely with faculty to design personalized academic paths aligned with their specific interests, with options to take courses in related disciplines.
Our alumni have obtained teaching positions at renowned institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, Indiana University, and Yale University. Additional career paths have included roles at Harvard University Press, as well as positions in libraries, museums, translation services, and film production.
The Department does not accept applications for standalone A.M. degrees. However, Ph.D. candidates can request a master's degree upon successfully completing eight approved half-courses with satisfactory grades.
We welcome applicants with traditional and non-traditional preparation in the field, as long as their foreign-language, linguistic, and literary-studies skills are strong. Applicants should show knowledge of Russian (or the language of the student's major field) equivalent to the Slavic courses Russian 113 and Russian 114 (4th year level Russian).
Formal training in literature or linguistics is highly desirable for admission. In order to anticipate the language requirement, it helps for a candidate to have a reading knowledge of French, German, or a second Slavic language, although this is not a prerequisite.
Applicants must receive a minimum score of 80 for the TOEFL, and it is not common for applicants to be admitted with TOEFL scores below 90. The minimum IELTS Academic score is 6.5. Some programs may require higher scores. Application Deadline: January 5.
