To equip students for these challenges, the Institute at Brown for Environment and Society (IBES) provides two undergraduate programs: an A.B. in Environmental Sciences and Studies and an Sc.B. in Environmental Sciences and Studies. The A.B. ensures students gain comprehensive, interdisciplinary environmental knowledge, whereas the Sc.B. offers specialized study in one concentration: Climate and Energy, Conservation and Natural Systems, Environmental Justice and Health, or Sustainable Development and Governance. Both programs combine natural sciences, social sciences, and public policy perspectives.
By completing core courses, track requirements, and a culminating capstone experience—whether through coursework, independent research, or projects—our graduates become prepared to significantly impact environmental research and initiatives across local, national, and international levels.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
