The Urban Studies Program equips students with the skills to examine cities, urban environments, and urbanization through multiple academic perspectives. Participants explore the origins of cities, their development cycles, organizational structures, and strategies for creating vibrant, equitable, safe, and eco-friendly communities. The coursework investigates the root causes of urban challenges, historical solutions, and forward-thinking approaches to city planning. As a fundamentally interdisciplinary field, Urban Studies promotes holistic thinking to tackle intricate urban issues while aligning with broader liberal arts objectives. Students develop essential competencies in analytical reasoning, data-driven decision making, statistical analysis, and teamwork through three writing-focused research seminars and an advanced quantitative methods course. Hands-on research and fieldwork enable learners to process, analyze, and present both numerical and geographic information. Through seminar projects, students bridge theoretical concepts with practical implementation, refine their communication abilities, and establish meaningful community connections. This comprehensive approach cultivates civic-minded graduates while preparing them for diverse career paths.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
