The Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACA) concentration provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary foundation in the cultural, historical, and modern-day aspects of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Latino/a communities abroad. The curriculum offers adaptable requirements to support students' specialized interests in exploring this region's rich diversity. The program focuses on four key components: language proficiency, regional studies, research methods, and practical experience through internships or community service. Students may graduate with honors or participate in the Engaged Scholars Program. The LACA Engaged Scholars Program (ESP) enables concentrators to bridge academic studies with community involvement in Providence and other locations. Participants integrate fieldwork—including internships, public service, and humanitarian initiatives—with scholarly pursuits to cultivate meaningful social awareness and engagement.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
