History examines the evolution of societies and cultures globally throughout different eras. Students focusing on history develop critical writing and analytical skills while gaining insights from multiple viewpoints. The department provides an extensive selection of courses covering human development across time, from ancient Greek and Roman societies to the histories of Africa, the Middle East, the Americas, and Asia. Some classes focus on specialized subjects, while others examine specific nations (such as China or Brazil) or historical periods (like Antiquity or the 20th century). Through these diverse offerings, students cultivate comprehensive understandings of both past and present contexts.
The Honors program typically spans three semesters, with students progressing through HIST 1992 (History Honors Workshop for Prospective Thesis Writers), HIST 1993 (History Honors Workshop for Thesis Writers I), and HIST 1994 (History Honors Workshop for Thesis Writers II). Together, these courses form the History Honors Workshop. All sequence courses are available each semester, allowing students to begin with HIST 1992 in either their 5th or 6th semester. We particularly advise students planning to study abroad during their 6th semester to take HIST 1992 in semester 5 to facilitate research in international archives. Seniors may submit their theses in either semester 7 or 8.
