The Department of Art Conservation stands as a global pioneer dedicated to training expert conservators proficient in assessing, analyzing, restoring, and safeguarding cultural artifacts. The department offers both undergraduate and master's programs in art conservation, with the graduate program partnered with Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, alongside a multidisciplinary doctoral program in Preservation Studies.
Bridging arts, humanities, and sciences, the undergraduate art conservation degree equips students for advanced studies in material culture preservation, historic conservation, museum sciences, archival studies, and related disciplines. As one of just five such programs nationwide, it provides hands-on experience with top conservators and researchers while examining diverse cultural artifacts—from archaeological finds to indigenous and modern works—drawn from UD's Special Collections & Museum and global repositories. For over 50 years, our alumni have conserved landmark pieces ranging from the Declaration of Independence and Emancipation Proclamation to the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Forbidden City's ornate interiors, and recently, the George Floyd Memorial. Their contributions unite communities, deepen cultural appreciation, and spread enlightenment and inspiration.
