To graduate with honors in their chosen field, students must produce an outstanding thesis and achieve excellent grades in their concentration courses, earning mostly A's. The thesis represents a substantial, original scholarly contribution that may involve various approaches—from foundational research paving the way for future breakthroughs to practical solutions addressing environmental issues, or even collaborative projects with external organizations. This yearlong senior project, spanning two semesters, is guided by a faculty advisor, typically an IBES Fellow, though other Brown faculty may serve as advisors with approval. Each thesis also benefits from a second reader, who offers guidance and helps assess the final product. This reader may be another Brown professor or an environmental professional from outside the university.
