The Department of Environmental Studies equips students with comprehensive knowledge and practical abilities to address ecological challenges and foster sustainability from local to worldwide levels. This is achieved through interdisciplinary, solution-focused education and diverse course offerings spanning multiple academic fields. The program leverages NYU's distinguished faculty from Arts and Science (FAS), the Center for Atmosphere Ocean Science (CAOS, Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences/FAS), the Center on Environmental and Land Use Law (Law School), the MA Program in Bioethics (Health Faculty), and the Environmental Conservation Education program (Steinhardt School), along with contributions from Wagner Graduate School, Stern School of Business, Gallatin School, and the School of Medicine.
Students can explore various specializations such as ecological sciences, environmental ethics, policy and legislation, earth systems science, community health, urban sustainability issues, climate dynamics, renewable energy solutions, equitable environmental practices, and humanity's evolving relationship with both cultivated and natural ecosystems.
