The Comparative Literature concentration allows students to examine diverse literary subjects while cultivating a nuanced appreciation of cultural distinctions and their significance. Our curriculum facilitates cross-cultural literary exploration, delving into global literary traditions and contemporary developments. Aligning with Brown's Open Curriculum philosophy, this concentration offers exceptional flexibility in academic pursuits. Upper-level literature courses from any department at Brown qualify for concentration requirements. Students may incorporate any language offered at Brown, whether classical or modern, into their Comparative Literature studies. The program includes a literary theory course and provides the option to undertake a senior thesis project.
Students should complete secondary school. Brown first-year students will have completed 12 to 13 years of primary and secondary schooling.
A TOEFL score of 100 or above on the internet-based exam, or 600 or above on the paper-based exam, or a score of 8.0 or above on the IELTS, is expected in most cases.
