The BYU Master of Arts in English is a two-year graduate program consisting of 26 course credits and 6 thesis credits. This program equips students for doctoral studies or professional paths in education, writing, or editorial fields. Unlike universities offering Ph.D. programs, BYU's English department focuses exclusively on master's candidates, offering affordable tuition alongside substantial financial assistance. While not automatic, most graduate students secure paid roles as writing instructors, teaching aides, or research assistants. Our faculty delivers comprehensive studies with concentrations in American literature, British literature, English education, or Rhetoric and Composition. Graduates frequently advance to Ph.D. programs or establish careers in writing, publishing, education, law, and related fields.
English Education students expand their expertise in literary studies, rhetoric, and composition. They also explore pedagogical theories and research methods for secondary English/language arts instruction, focusing particularly on writing, reading, youth literature, and digital literacy. With faculty guidance, students tailor their curriculum to align with academic interests. Throughout the program, participants may serve as writing instructors, teaching aides, or research assistants. As they progress, students are urged to share and publish their research. Graduates emerge prepared to impact their educational communities or pursue advanced degrees.
Beyond standard MA prerequisites, English Teaching applicants need three years of full-time secondary English teaching experience and current teaching certification.
