Becoming a music educator in schools is a rewarding career path that offers lasting joy and creative expression. To support this goal, the BYU School of Music provides both undergraduate and graduate programs in music education. Students can earn bachelor's degrees with teaching certification in general music education, as well as secondary choral and instrumental music education. The school also offers Master of Arts and Master of Music degrees in this field.
Similar to other music majors, undergraduate music education students join BYU's performance ensembles and complete the core music curriculum. Additionally, they take diverse courses and gain hands-on experiences tailored to teaching various grade levels within their specialization. From their first semester, music education majors participate in real-world teaching placements in public schools, guided by an accomplished faculty team with national recognition and diverse expertise. BYU's music education graduates are highly valued by employers for their exceptional training and teach in schools across the U.S. and Canada.
This program fulfills Utah's educational requirements for professional licensure or certification. Students planning to work in other states should consult BYU's academic advisement center and the relevant state licensing board to understand local certification requirements.
